New Weekly Livestream + Join Our New Community!

Robert Rodriguez Jr / Issue No. 62 / Nov 4th, 2024

Hello Reader,

Thanks to everyone who attended the last "Lightroom—Ask Me Anything" webinar. If you missed it, you can watch it here: Creative Cafe #13: Lightroom AMA

I'm happy to announce I'm launching a new weekly Youtube livestream titled "Creative Cafe—Live" where I'll share compositional insights, Lightroom tips, critique user submitted images, and talk about using technology creativity. Stay tuned for more info soon!

New Home for the Community

Due to maintenance and cost factors, I've decided to move the community forum to a new home on Discord. This is a chance to revitalize the community in a way that keeps us connected and focused on what matters most—learning, sharing, and supporting one another.

If you haven’t used Discord before, it’s a blend of a forum and chat app designed for community interaction. It’s available via web browser, desktop, and mobile apps—making it easy to stay engaged wherever you are.

The Creative Path community has always been a great place to ask questions, share your images, and just chat with other like minded photographers in a supportive, healthy environment. I'd love for you to join and help us grow together. There are a few friendly members there already waiting to welcome you in.

(If you were a past forum member, you'll have to join again as there is no way to migrate existing users.)

Mastering Lightroom Classic

In a recent Lightroom consultation, I was asked if it was possible to have Lightroom Classic show you all of the virtual copies that exist in your catalog. And the answer is yes using Smart Collections! This is useful if you want to eliminate un-needed virtual copies or just do some basic catalog maintenance.
Here are the simple steps:

  1. In the Library Module, click on the plus sign in the Collections heading and select "Create Smart Collection."
  2. In the window that pops up, name your smart collection, then set the first field in the rule to "Copy Name" which is found in the submenu of "File Name / Type."
  3. Set the second field to "isn't empty."
  4. Click on Save!

This Smart Collection will now dynamically always show you any and all virtual copies in your entire catalog. Smart collections are an underutilized feature of Lightroom that I think is one of its best organizational features, so I'll be sharing more of how I use them in the future.

Inspiration

“If a riverbed remains unchanged, the water will continue to flow along the path it always has, since that is the most natural route for it to take. If the underlying structures of your life remain unchanged, the greatest tendency is for you to follow the same direction your life has always taken.” - Robert Fritz

Upcoming Workshops

Spaces are limited to just 5 students per workshop, ensuring plenty of one-on-one time. Academy members receive a 10% discount.

I love hearing from you! Just hit reply and let me know your thoughts. Any ideas or questions? I'm here to help.

Thanks for reading!

Robert :)

Helping you reach your creative potential! From Image to Experience: A Mindful Approach to Photography Robert Rodriguez Jr / Issue No. 63 / Nov 10th, 2024 Hello Reader, A recent discussion about mindfulness with a friend and student got me thinking about the immense influence it’s had on my own work. The single most important lesson it’s taught me is that what matters most isn't my images, but my experience. Put another way, the inner landscape is more important than the outer one. You can't...

Helping you reach your creative potential! Mastering Visual Design: It’s More Than Just Lines and Curves Robert Rodriguez Jr / Issue No. 60 / Oct 7th, 2024 Hello Reader, Visual design and composition are topics I never stop learning about or sharing with others, but I’ll be honest—it can feel mechanical and uninspiring. Telling students they now have to go into the field and start looking for lines, curves, specific shapes, color combinations, and all the rest does seem like a sure way to...

The key to making images that truly convey your unique perspective is by improving your artistic vision. It's only though sharing your vision that you can be truly authentic as a photographer, and in my mind that counts more than being original. It means that even though you may photograph something that's already been photographed, you have the opportunity to show others how you see the same subject, and hopefully how you feel about it as well. While this is a deep subject, here are ten ways...
